Story
Homer calls his father, furious, and demands to know what Grampa was thinking, accepting this land from Mr. Burns. Grampa finally remembers when he was given the land – apparently, everyone at the Retirement Castle received a gift of property for Arbor Day this year, which Homer would have known if he'd remembered to celebrate it like a GOOD son. Grampa then tells him that it's fine – the agreement was that even though he "owned" the land, it wouldn't really transfer to him as long as neither he nor any of his family ever stepped foot on the property. Homer immediately freezes, and Grampa asks where Homer is calling from, at which point Homer "mysteriously" suffers from a dropped call. The family pile back into the station wagon, utterly depressed and demoralized by this turn of events, with even Lisa unable to think of any way this won't end in financial ruin for the family. When they do finally arrive back at their home, they find out that they're not the only ones who have been affected by this – Dr. Hibbert's father was also gifted a parcel of land that contains a dump site, and Dr. Hibbert has just gotten back from a similar trip. But unlike the Simpsons, he's got a plan. It turns out that Hibbert has already contacted Walther Hotenhoffer, as he noticed something unusual about the dump site and wanted a second opinion. Walther tells the Simpsons that if they were willing to talk Grampa into selling the property to him, he'll assume all responsibility for it, to which Homer IMMEDIATELY agrees. With the property finally settled and not a problem anymore, the family is able to relax and enjoy Christmas. However, Lisa reaches out to Walther Hotenhoffer to ask what happened with the property, and he tells her that a new strain of algae in the toxic lake was discovered that not only feeds on and destroys the toxicity, but it can be used to create chemotherapy treatments that are significantly less damaging to the human body and will make millions. And as Homer is celebrating their good fortune, he is reminded that they sold the property for next to nothing and will see none of those profits. D'oh!

Story
After a surprisingly restful vacation, Lisa and Maggie are going for one final hike through the property when they come across a frozen lake in the middle of the property. It's the middle of the day, and looks quite peaceful and idyllic, so they decide to go back and get the rest of the family for a nice cookout at the side of the lake that evening. However, when the family returns later that night, the family notices that the lake isn't simply glowing because of the sunlight reflecting off the ice…it's glowing because of something INSIDE of the lake, and the runoff pipes that were previously hidden by sun glare are now painfully visible. This isn't an idyllic mountain lake – this is a toxic waste dump! Homer suddenly feels greatly relieved about his initial plan to sell the property, only for Lisa to break the terrible news to him – this is a toxic superfund site, and not only are they legally forbidden to sell it, they are responsible for cleaning it up at their own expense. And just as things can't seem to get any worse, they catch sight of movement off in the distance, and see Smithers and Mr. Burns walking through the woods. The family rush to confront him, because he's obviously behind this plot, only for Marge to quickly stop everyone from rushing forward and lead them around BEHIND the man with the gun and the itchy trigger finger. When they finally do catch up to Mr. Burns, he questions what they're doing here, and then reveals that he's made an agreement with the owner of this property that he's allowed to continue dumping his waste for another 80 years. At which point everyone realizes how Grampa managed to get this "idyllic vacation home" without any of them knowing about it.

Story
Homer immediately straps on a pair of snowshoes and takes off walking around the perimeter of the property, leaving the rest of the family to try and figure out what they're going to do about this. Marge realizes that she's going to have to keep the family alive, and immediately throws on a flannel shirt and picks up an axe to start getting them firewood so they don't freeze to death. Lisa and Maggie set off to forage for berries. While the girls are out foraging, they stumble across a path that leads them to a local grocery store that has a surprisingly robust vegan food selection. Meanwhile, Bart discovers that there's an abandoned fire station just down the road with satellite internet that he's able to tap. Homer returns to find that the family, rather than hating the cabin, has settled in and made themselves comfortable, and is deeply annoyed by all of this. It turns out he was walking the perimeter to get an accurate acreage to put on a FOR SALE sign, as he'd planned to dump this the second they inherited it, and now the rest of the family is trying to convince him to like it.

Story
Homer calls his father on the phone to let him know that he has decided that Grampa's Christmas Gift this year is that Homer is going to help him get his estate planning done…though it's really just to set up a DNR to "hurry things along." Unfortunately for Homer, Grampa informs him that he's already done this. Homer rushes over to the Retirement Castle to get a copy of Grampa's estate planning and returns home to read over it. However, because it was done by an actual lawyer, he's struggling to make heads or tails of it, so he asks Marge for help. The two of them discover that, among everything else they knew of, it looks like Grampa has a vacation home none of them knew about, on a huge amount of land. This surprises all of them, as this very much seems like something they would have known about. Homer calls his father to ask what the deal is with this vacation home, but Grampa can't remember anything about it. So Homer decides to do the thing he dreads most, and actually drives over to the retirement castle to talk to Grampa about it. Grampa still can't recall anything about the home, but Bart, who was "encouraged" to tag along, steals his keys. Homer arrives back home to tell Marge that he's had a great idea for a Christmas vacation. The family is surprised, and initially extremely skeptical, but after some convincing, they pile into the station wagon and head out to this vacation home. However, once they arrive, they discover that this "vacation home" is little more than a log cabin in the woods with no heating outside of a wood-burning stove.

Overview
Homer's plan for a Christmas present for his father backfires when, upon calling to let Grampa know they're going to do his estate planning for him, his father informs him that it's already been done. When Homer and Marge read through the will, they discover a vacation home neither of them knew anything about, so Homer decides to go check it out, dragging the family along with him as a "Christmas vacation." But when they arrive, they discover that this vacation home is nothing more than a basic log cabin with no amenities to speak of, and the vacation looks like it'll be a total bust. But the family pulls together, much to everyone's surprise, and manage to have a relaxing week out in the woods. That is, until Lisa and Maggie discover a lake on their property that's glowing an ominous shade of green. Turns out that Mr. Burns "gifted" the land to Grampa to hide an illegal dumping site for toxic waste, and now the Simpsons are responsible for the cleanup. Will they be able to find a way out of this? There's Snow Place Like the Woods to find out!
